National President, Union of Nigeria Baptist Convention, Dr. Baware George, has said the ongoing economic recession is a veritable avenue for the Buhari administration to prove its worth.
He told the administration to stop blaming the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for its failure, saying governance is about problem-solving and the current parlous economic situation will be a measure to gauge Buhari’s competence.
In a public lecture entitled: ‘Effective Leadership In A Depressed Economy,’ Baware said the APC should quickly wean itself of the euphoria of 2015 presidential elections and contrive ways to solve the country’s economic crisis for history to record it on the positive side.
At the event held in Ado Ekiti at the weekend, Baware faulted the social security scheme of the Federal Government on the premise that it was just running without a credible data, saying: “There is need to gather very good data system of the people, which would be the strategy towards achieving the social goal.”
Urging Buhari to take proactive steps before situations get messier, Baware said: “What a depressed economy needs is a leader with exceptional skills, who would need to step up his skills, raise the bar with deployment of skills. Strong and effective leaders are identified in time of crisis.
“Nigeria is going through some leadership challenges because we don’t know the country’s core values. We can’t situate our visions and core values, but we depend on the views of a leader at a time. We don’t have a shared vision. A leader should be able to inculcate leadership values in the followers, ensures that he fulfils his promises, and not play to impress people. Today, Nigerians don’t take their leaders serious because they don’t trust them.”
