RATTAWU condemns increasing ties to ethnicity, regionalism

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu has urged Nigerians to ignore those practices that threaten Nigeria’s unity.He said no nation survives without justice and equity.

In a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Uche Anichukwu, the Deputy Senate President enjoined Nigerians to eschew all forms of recrimination and imbibe self-sacrifice, forgiveness and other higher virtues that promote national unity and development.

He said: “I congratulate our Muslim brethren on this occasion of Eid-el-Kabir. This season of conviviality presents another opportunity to reflect on our national challenges and the way forward.”

Also, former Senate President, David Mark, has canvassed for justice, righteousness and peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.He said only a harmonious and peaceful co-existence could guarantee meaningful development.

Mark, who cautioned against any action or utterance capable of threatening the indivisibility of Nigeria, said the country as a nation had over the years weathered the storm of socio-economic and political challenges.

He, therefore, urged authorities at all levels to begin forthwith a peace-building mechanism between and among various groups so that the present misconceptions in some quarters would not snowball into a bigger crises.

Besides, the senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Mr. Gbenga Ashafa, has enjoined the Muslim faithful to eschew violence, intolerance, selfishness and guard against unguarded comments.

In his Sallah message yesterday, Ashafa said it is imperative of Nigerians, both Christians and Muslims, to avoid any act that is capable of causing disaffection irrespective of tribe, language and creed.

In the same vein, Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) has cautioned against the growing trend of ethnic, regional fanatism among Nigerians, saying that the consequence could only be tragic if immediate steps are not taken to address the development.

In a separate statement issued yesterday to commemorate the Sallah celebration and signed by its President, Kabir Garba Tsanni and the General Secretary, Akpauso Anieti Udo, the union noted that the deteriorating economic situation in the country played its role in the messages of disunity being spread around the country.

Tsanni said: “While wishing all a joyous celebration, it remains worrisome that the socio-economic situation of Nigeria is not improving as fast as expected. Consequently, there is increasing trust deficit between the leaders and the led.
