The world of music is steadily evolving in Nigeria, from the familiar crowd of your favourite musicians to the new wave of musicians. They have become appealing mostly to the millennials based on their lyrics and bond created by the present generation.

Inspired by the need to make music, alternative artist Lady Donli formerly known by her rap name Zainab is part of a wave of Nigerian artists who are creating a unique music scene in the country. Her recent single featuring Tomi Thomas Ice Cream has been getting stunning reviews home and abroad. She is also the co-founder of the collective known as SAFI. Currently, she has three musical projects to her name titled What’s Is Perfect, Love or War and most recently Wallflower who has been making rounds in the alternative indie scene in Nigeria. Her career seems to be on a steady climb as she was featured in Complex Magazine’s Bout to Blow: 10 Dope New Songs You Should be Hearing Everywhere Soon in May alongside Wizkid and Katy Perry.

Odunsi The Engine

Also known as Odunsi, he is a producer and artist taking the music scene by storm one track at a time. Launching his career in 2015 with the release of his debut EP Time of Our Lives (TOOL), he has gone on to work with the likes of Tay Iwar, Nonso Amadi and more. His track Situationship made Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 and was featured on Billboard early in the year. His approach which has been coined as afro-fusion is a mix of genres like afrobeat, soul, RnB, and electronica. His sound out there is basically giving a new perspective on what it means to be an African artist.

Thomas is not new to the music scene, he has been around since 2010 when he joined the boy band LOS (Loud On Sound) with hit single Bad Guy P. He says that he is inspired by the likes of Mariah Carey, Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, Eminem, Akon and Bumi Thomas. Recently, he has been relishing in the scene of underground music as he released his LP Black Couch Vol I which features the singles, Not My Bae feat. Santi and Waging Wars. He is also a major element to the rising track Ice Cream with Lady Donli.

Unconventional and eclectic are the words that come to mind when you see Wavy The Creator. Asides being a photographer, graphic designer, fashion designer and musician, she is as her name implies a diverse creative who channels her every outlet possible. Focusing on her musical outlet, she released her debut single called H.I.G.H (Her In Greater Heights) which is a feel good track which she renders so well in her soothing voice. For one heavily involved in different mediums, she has the promise of holding her own in the music industry.

Tay Iwar

Tay Iwar

Tay Iwar is a recording artist, singer, songwriter, audio engineer and record producer who started music at the age 14. He has also won awards for Nigerian Teen Choice Award for Choice Male Artist and Nigerian Teen Choice Award for Choice Producer. His sound has been said to be a fusion of Drake, The Weeknd and Trey Songz which gives off a mix of alternative RnB and Hip Hop.His single Equestrian Love which was used as a soundtrack for the season 3 finale of Ndani TV’s Skinny Girl in Transit, became an online sensation. He also released EP titled Passport, as well as other singles, are quickly rising to the top of the music charts.
