Eating alone at a restaurant can be an awkward experience, particularly in Lagos. Besides the uncomfortable stares from couples, there’s an intense sense of pity with people wondering, “Don’t you have any friends?” SOUTH Eatery was quite different. The atmosphere exuded a friendly tone, which made it easier to be a happy loner.
SOUTH Eatery is located at 92b Younis Bashorun Street, Victoria Island. The décor presents an American “southern” modern feel, with wood and words plastered on the walls in black and white. It’s a fairly large space with an artsy sitting “swing” space outside.
Something fishy
If you’ve tried the lobster roll at the American restaurant, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co, then you’ll understand why I chose to try out the shrimp roll. I had imagined exactly how I wanted it to taste but it turned out different. The shrimp roll was a soft toasted bread roll stuffed with fresh shrimps, celery, chives, smoked paprika mixed with tarragon mayo. The meal was quite creamy and the taste of the celery was very intense. I loved the consistency and softness of the bread and found that I enjoyed the meal, even more, when I added some ketchup. The meal was served with lightly salted fries, which I felt could have been better.
A jar of goodness
I’m attracted to any cocktail associated with lemonade because it’s really hard to get it wrong. I opted for the bourbon berry lemonade, which turned out to be awesome! It was just the right amount of sweet and not too alcoholic. It consisted of fresh berry medley, bourbon, lemon, mint, and cardamom (seed spice). The cardamom spice gave the drink a spicy twist, which became annoying when I kept chewing the seeds that kept piling up through the straw. Overall, it was a fantastic experience. I found the atmosphere very soothing, plus the staff were friendly and extremely attentive. Their price range was between N2500 to N12500, nothing out of the ordinary for a fancy restaurant in Lagos. I would definitely be going back with a fresh mind, to try out some meat!
