A Lagos tennis club and a House of Assembly member representing Oshodi/Isolo Two Constituency, Jude Idimogu, have drummed the need for grassroots development of sports in the state.
Adejumo Tennis and Sports Development Club, a family club with variety of sporting facilities, made the call during its recent send-forth/inaugural ceremony held at its facility at Oke Afa in Ejigbo area of Lagos State.
Speaking at the occasion, the newly inaugurated president of the club, Alhaji Adegboyega Sanni said government needs to encourage sporting activities at local levels.
According to him, supporting sporting activities at the local level will help the youths to positively channel their energy, which some of them dissipate into negative activities, to things that will be of greater benefit to the local area.
Sanni said that the club’s new executive members have an 11-point agenda, which includes increase in facilities, improve on the existing ones, encourage children and women to be active participants, to hold seminars on benefits of sporting activities to social and economic life and to assist the government at the local level to ensure that youths dissipate their energy on positive ventures.
He said the club will need the sponsorship of corporate bodies and government to actualize some of the goals and called on them to assist them when the need arises.
Also speaking at the event, Idimogu noted that the facilities of the club were being utilized and promised to draw the attention of Lagos government to it.
“If utilized, the club facilities will help us develop sports activities from the grassroots, which will in turn help Lagos to do well in sports festivals.
“I am a member of this constituency and as a member of sports committee in the state Assembly, I will assist the club by drawing government’s activities here and helping to promote sports at the grassroots.”
