Delta State House of Assembly, last Thursday, dissolved the State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) after two-thirds of the members voted in support of the motion, which was brought under matters of urgent public importance by the majority leader, Hon. Tim Owhefere, Ughelli North I.
In the motion, Hon. Owhefere, said the dissolution was informed by exigencies of the fast improving democracy of the state and the constant dynamics of electoral and electioneering processes.
Further, the Majority Leader explained that the motion was in line with Section 7 Subsection 1 of the laws setting up the commission, which he said was due to visible defects and shortcomings in the state’s electoral processes.
The Speaker, Sheriff Oborevwori, immediately directed the Clerk of the house to provide a teller to collate the votes and signatures of the members in view of the peculiar nature of the motion before the house.
In a single file, the members approached the clerk’s table and appended their signatures against their names for or against the dissolution of the DSIEC board.
Announcing the result of the voting, the clerk of the house, Mrs. Lyna Ocholor, said that while 20 members voted for the dissolution, eight members were absent and nobody voted against.
The speaker, therefore, called on the governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa to dissolve the commission with immediate effect in line with the requirement of two third majority votes hereby call.
Recall that the house received a bill for a law to repeal the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission 2012, titled, “Delta State Electoral Law, 2017,” sent through a letter to the house last Tuesday.
