In its bid to provide long lasting building solutions and reduce the rate of building collapses in Nigeria, Lafarge Africa Plc has trained 100 bricklayers and technicians in the construction and building industry.

The one-day training at Sagamu is part of the building solutions company’s campaign to improve the quality of block moulding and raise safety standards.
It is a move to ensure that construction workers and artisans keep up with best practices and techniques says Bukola Adebisi, Technical Services Manager at Lafarge.

According to Adebisi, the training is intended to promote a good synergy between the Association of Bricklayers and Lafarge Africa Plc considering that over 95 percent of buildings in the informal sector in Nigeria are managed by operators in the informal sector.

Most individual home builders in Nigeria rely on bricklayers for their construction needs, hence Lafarge’s commitment to constantly upgrade the knowledge of artisans as well as their safety standards.

Speaking on behalf of bricklayers, Abdullah Saheed, chairman of the Association of Bricklayers, commended Lafarge for the training and empowerment and pledged that bricklayers under his watch would continue to use the right quality and quantity of building materials for their projects.

A comprehensive research on building collapse from the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) shows that poor quality building materials and incompetent workers are responsible for deficient buildings.
