The Ebonyi State government has released N1.5 billion for the payment of pensions and gratuities being owed the state workers from 1996 to 2017. Consequently, the Dave Umahi Continuity Initiative for 2019 has commended the state government for the release noting that the achievements.
Coordinator of the group, Enyinnaya Egwu said this in a chat with newsmen that the release of N1.5 billion for arrears and pensions of retired civil servants in the state from 1996-till date, has distinguished him from former governors of the state, who he said, could not achieve the feat.
He said the group will do all it can to deliver the governor in the 2019 general elections and called on the people of the state to continue to support his administration.
Briefing journalists after the state executive meeting in Abakaliki, commissioner for Information and Orientation, Emmanuel Onwe, stated that N750 million will be use for the payment of the pensions arrears and gratuities of retired State Civil Servants while the remaining N750 million will be use for the payment of the pensions arrears and gratuities of council workers.
He said the release of the fund came following the conclusion of the Committee on the Verification of the State Pensions and Gratuities work from October 2, 1996 to June 6, 2017,
He further directed all eligible beneficiaries to proceed immediately to the office of the Deputy Governor for verification to ensure that payments were made.
He noted that the Council after deliberating on the deepening economic recession in the country, resolved to expand the state government’s empowerment programme to meet the people’s growing economic challenges, particularly the most vulnerable in society.
Onwe noted that the economic empowerment of over 2, 000 widows across the state with N200, 000 each has been released, adding that programme has been expanded to accommodate additional 2,000 widows.
