A herbalist, who strangled a newborn baby and threw the body into a pit latrine, has been apprehended by the police in Katsina State.Confirming the incident yesterday, spokesperson of the police command in the state, DSP Gambo Isah, said the incident occurred in Gyaza, a village in Kafur local council.
According to Isah, mother of the newborn baby, Fatima Garba, had a dispute with her husband, one Sule Abubakar, and was sent out of her matrimonial home. Fatima then consulted the herbalist about her situation, and he assured her that her husband would recall her back to her home, which he eventually did.
He said the development made the woman to begin confiding in the herbalist with private and other family matters. The herbalist later took advantage of the situation, had carnal knowledge of her, and got her pregnant.
“After giving birth, Fatima out of shame, went and inform the herbalist about the baby as her husband’s other wives were making jest of her for giving birth to a child outside matrimonial home. It was when she went to tell the herbalist about the baby that he strangled the baby and threw the body into the latrine.
“The police later got wind of the information, went to the house and dug out the latrine to recover the lifeless body of the baby,” Isah said, adding that the herbalist and the woman are presently in police custody.
